“Phi Tam Khon” was later shifted to “Phi Ta Khon” derived from Vessantara Jataka. It took place when Phra Wetsandon and Matsee were heading out of the forest back to the city and holy spirits as well as wild animals came to send them off with people. Nowadays “Phi Ta Khon Festival” is part of a grand merit-making festival known as Boon Luang and very unique to the Dan Sai District in Loei Province. It combines Boon Pha Wet Festival and Boon Bang Fai Festival together. The festival lasts for 3 days and on the parade day there are 2 types of Phi Ta Khon. The first type is Phi Ta Khon Yai made from bamboo with a double height of normal people. The second type is called Phi Ta Khon Lek where both children and adults participate in the fun activity by wearing Phi Ta Khon masks. For those who would like to see strange looking Phi Ta Khon, please visit Phi Ta Khon Museum at Wat Phone Chai Temple before pay homage to Phra That Si Song Rak.
